Service Technician
Who am I?
A Service Technician performs maintenance and service on refrigeration, heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems and equipment in the field. If an HVAC system malfunctions, a service technician troubleshoots diagnoses and resolves technical problem, making repairs through the use a variety of methods, including the replacement of worn or faulty parts.

The most important Essential Skills for a Service Technician (as determined through industry consultation) are:
- Numeracy – Uses mathematical functions to estimate time and cost materials. Also applies mathematics in use of testing equipment.
- Document Use - Correctly interprets wiring and assembly diagrams and understands and follows system and equipment operating manuals.
- Oral Communication Skills – Ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members through both oral and written communication.
What do I do?
As a Service Technician you may do some of the following:
- Perform maintenance, troubleshooting and repair work requiring HVACR trades knowledge
- Resolve system and equipment problems in the field in a timely manner, replacing components and making equipment adjustments when necessary
- Correctly interpret assembly diagrams
- Estimate time and materials for field servicing and identify other preventive work while on site.
- Ensure that work conforms to all municipal, utility codes and safety codes
- Communicate to customers proper care and maintenance accurately and explain the value of company’s products, services and programs
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all modern equipment and regulations
Education/Training
- Usually completion of secondary school is required
- Required to be a journeymen or indentured apprentice
- Licensed Refrigeration Mechanic, Mechanical Technician, Gas Fitter(II) or equivalent
- Knowledge of relevant codes and regulations such as Gas Code, safety requirements
- Require good driving record, valid driver’s license, and be insurable.
